A plumbing problem is an emergency when water is actively causing damage, sewage is backing up, or you can’t safely use essential plumbing. A burst pipe, overflowing toilet that will not stop, or major leak needs immediate attention. If water is near electrical equipment, stay clear of the area. Do not touch the equipment and do not enter standing water.

Find the main water shutoff near where the water line enters the home. A wheel-style valve normally closes by turning clockwise. A lever-style valve normally closes with a quarter-turn until the handle is across the pipe. For one leaking toilet or fixture, use its local shutoff if you can reach it safely. Do not force a stuck valve.

Repeated clogs usually mean the blockage is deeper than the part of the drain you can easily reach. Hair, grease, debris, or buildup inside the line can keep restricting flow after temporary fixes. If multiple drains are backing up at once, the problem may be farther down the plumbing system and should be diagnosed before another quick fix.

Low water pressure throughout the whole house usually points to a problem with the main water supply, pressure regulator, shutoff valve, or larger plumbing system. If only one faucet is affected, the problem is more likely at that fixture. A sudden pressure drop throughout the home is worth investigating, especially if it appears alongside signs of a leak.

Chemical drain cleaners are usually not the best choice for recurring or serious clogs. They can damage plumbing, cause chemical burns, and create a hazard for anyone who later opens the drain. Never mix drain-cleaning chemicals. Try a plunger for a simple clog, and tell us if you have already used a chemical cleaner.

An unexplained increase in water use is one of the clearest signs of a hidden leak. You may also notice damp spots, water stains, musty odors, peeling finishes, or the sound of running water when fixtures are off. If your water meter continues moving while everything is shut off, water may be escaping somewhere in the system.

A sharp bang when water suddenly stops is often water hammer. Fast-moving water hits a closed valve and sends a pressure shock through the pipes, which can make unsecured plumbing move or knock. If it happens frequently or becomes more severe, we recommend getting the piping and pressure checked.

Repiping makes sense when leaks and failures keep appearing throughout an aging plumbing system instead of in one isolated location. A single repair is usually more practical when the rest of the piping is in good condition. The condition and material of the existing pipes should be inspected before either option is recommended.
