Common HVAC questions
How long does a furnace usually last?
Most furnaces last about 15 to 20 years, but age alone does not determine when replacement is necessary. If yours is over 15 years old and needs frequent repairs, replacement may make more sense than continuing to repair it. The condition of the heat exchanger and other major components also matters.
What are the signs my furnace is failing?
Frequent breakdowns, unusual noises, weak airflow, uneven heating, or rising energy use can all point to a furnace problem. A furnace that struggles to reach the thermostat setting also needs attention. If you smell gas or a carbon monoxide alarm sounds, leave the area and call the gas utility or 911.
How often should heating and cooling be serviced?
Have the cooling system checked each spring and the heating system checked each fall. Regular service can identify worn parts, airflow problems, and other issues before the season when you rely on the equipment most.
Why is my house heating unevenly?
Uneven heating is often caused by airflow problems, duct issues, or a system that is not distributing heat properly. A blocked vent or dirty filter is worth checking first because both can restrict airflow. If the problem affects entire rooms or floors, the system and ductwork may need a closer look.
Should I repair an old furnace or replace it?
Consider replacement when the cost and frequency of repairs no longer make sense for the system’s age and condition. A minor repair on an otherwise reliable furnace may still be worthwhile. If major components are failing and the furnace is near the end of its expected life, replacement may be the better option.
How do I know what size furnace or AC I need?
The correct size is based on the heating or cooling load of the home, not square footage alone. An oversized system can cycle too often, while an undersized system may struggle to keep up. We evaluate the home, insulation, windows, ductwork, and existing setup before equipment is selected.
Why does my air conditioner freeze up?
Two common causes of a frozen air conditioner are restricted airflow and low refrigerant. Check whether the filter is dirty or the vents are blocked. Turn off the cooling if the system is frozen, because continued operation can cause further damage. We recommend having the cause checked before you run it again.
How often should I change my furnace filter?
Check the filter every month and replace it when it’s visibly dirty or restricting airflow. Many standard filters need replacement every 1 to 3 months, but the filter type matters most. A clogged filter makes the system work harder and can contribute to weak airflow, overheating, or cooling problems.
