Common air duct & vent cleaning questions

How often should air ducts be cleaned?

Air ducts do not need cleaning on a fixed yearly schedule. Cleaning makes more sense when there is visible dust or debris inside the system, contamination, or buildup around the vents. If your ducts look clean and airflow is normal, routine cleaning just because a certain number of years passed is usually unnecessary.

Does duct cleaning actually improve the air in my house?

Cleaning can help when dust, debris, or contaminants inside the ductwork are being circulated through the home. Other sources such as moisture or poor filtration may also need to be addressed to fully improve the air quality of your home.

What are the signs my ducts need cleaning?

Consider cleaning when you can see substantial dust or debris inside the ducts, particles are blowing from the registers, or the system contains pests or confirmed mold growth. Dust on a vent cover alone does not necessarily mean the ductwork needs cleaning.

Why does a dryer vent need cleaning?

Dryer vents need cleaning because lint buildup restricts airflow and can create a fire hazard. Poor airflow also makes the dryer work harder and take longer to dry clothes. Removing lint from the full vent run helps exhaust move outside properly instead of building up inside the duct.

How do I know if my dryer vent is blocked?

Clothes taking much longer to dry is one of the strongest signs of a restricted dryer vent. The dryer or laundry room may also feel unusually hot, or the outside vent may have weak airflow while the dryer is running. Stop using the dryer if you smell burning or see signs of overheating.

Will duct cleaning help with allergies or dust?

Duct cleaning may reduce dust coming from the HVAC system when buildup inside the ducts is part of the problem. It will not eliminate allergies or household dust by itself. A dirty filter, pets, carpeting, or other indoor sources can keep producing dust even after the ducts are cleaned.

How long does a duct cleaning take?

It depends on the size of the house. Up to about 1,500 square feet, expect up to 3 hours. Larger homes usually take 3 to 6 hours.

Will cleaning my ducts lower my heating bill?

Do not expect duct cleaning alone to produce a large drop in your heating bill. It can help airflow when heavy debris is restricting the system, but energy costs depend much more on the HVAC equipment, insulation, thermostat settings, and air leakage. Cleaning should be done for actual buildup, not promised as an energy-saving service.
